The Last 1604 Flyover Lands at Camp Bullis Road. The Ramps Below It Keep Moving.

When did the La Cantera Parkway ramp you used every week last work? For many drivers on the far Northwest Side, it was sometime between May and September of this year. Over those months, TxDOT closed one familiar connection after another at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange. Nearly every detour it posted pointed drivers north toward Camp Bullis Road.

That shift is the real story of 2026 for The Dominion. The flyovers were finished early in the year. Since then, construction at ground level has slowly moved everyday access off La Cantera Parkway and onto the interchange on The Dominion's side of the corridor.

Eight flyovers, then a different kind of construction

The elevated part of the project finished first. TxDOT opened the first flyover at Loop 1604 and I-10 in December 2024. It opened the second through seventh between June and November 2025, and the eighth and final ramp in early February 2026. That last ramp mattered most to anyone driving home toward Boerne. It carries westbound 1604 traffic onto westbound I-10. Drivers get on from westbound 1604 at Lockhill-Selma Road and come off on westbound I-10 past La Cantera Parkway at Camp Bullis.

With every highway-to-highway connection open, the crews moved down to ground level. In early March, TxDOT put the interchange at about 70% complete. That is still the latest progress figure it has published. The remaining work is the lower-level infrastructure and frontage roads. The planned buildout adds ground-level roundabouts, I-10 turnarounds, sidewalks, changes to the VIA Park & Ride, and collector-distributor roads. That ground-level work is what keeps changing the exits people use every day.

The 2026 ramp calendar

Here is how this year went for the ramps that serve the stretch between 1604 and Camp Bullis Road:

  1. May 1. The westbound Loop 1604 exit to La Cantera Parkway closed for good. The detour has drivers leave for the westbound 1604 frontage road before the interchange and stay on it all the way through.
  2. June 8. The eastbound I-10 entrance and exit ramps at La Cantera Parkway closed. On the same day, a new eastbound I-10 entrance ramp opened just east of Camp Bullis Road.
  3. September 14. At 5 a.m., the eastbound I-10 entrance ramp south of the Loop 1604 interchange closed permanently.
  4. End of 2026. A new UTSA Boulevard bypass ramp is scheduled to open, so drivers can get past the La Cantera Parkway backups.

KSAT explained the September closure in one line:

"The closure is needed to accommodate future roadway improvements."

The "future improvement" at the end of that list is the UTSA bypass. Each closure on the list clears space for a piece of the finished design. Until that design is complete, drivers are left with detours.

Camp Bullis Road is taking over La Cantera's job

Line up the detours and the same pattern shows up again and again.

Drivers on La Cantera Parkway who want eastbound I-10 no longer have their own on-ramp. TxDOT's posted route sends them west on the I-10 frontage road to the U-turn at Camp Bullis Road. From there they double back on the eastbound frontage road and take the first entrance ramp they reach. That first ramp is the one that opened in June just east of Camp Bullis Road. Drivers coming the other way on eastbound I-10 who are headed for La Cantera Parkway get off earlier now. They use Exit 555 and follow the frontage road through the La Cantera Parkway intersection, since Exit 556B is closed.

So the Camp Bullis Road U-turn and the new ramp beside it now carry trips that used to start and end at La Cantera Parkway. That matters for The Dominion because Camp Bullis Road was already where the final flyover lets westbound traffic off. Traffic headed to The Rim, Six Flags Fiesta Texas and UTSA is being pushed toward the same interchange that people heading home to The Dominion use.

TxDOT's October 4 closure list shows the work hasn't let up. It listed overnight lane closures on I-10 between Camp Bullis and De Zavala, with one lane kept open. It also listed alternating U-turn closures and closures at the La Cantera ramps and intersection. The same list noted long-term restrictions on the eastbound I-10 frontage road between La Cantera and the interchange, plus a permanently closed eastbound Loop 1604 entrance ramp past the I-10 interchange.

How the regular trips work now

Heading home from the Medical Center or the airport side of 1604

The easiest of the three. Stay on westbound 1604 past Lockhill-Selma and take the final flyover onto westbound I-10. You'll come down past La Cantera Parkway at Camp Bullis. If you want to stop at The Rim on the way home, skip the old westbound 1604 exit to La Cantera Parkway, because it's gone. Move to the westbound 1604 frontage road before the interchange and stay on it all the way through.

Heading toward downtown on eastbound I-10

Coming out of The Dominion, the new eastbound I-10 entrance just east of Camp Bullis Road is your first way onto the main lanes. If you've already dropped down to the frontage road for an errand near The Rim, plan on a longer ride. Since September 14, drivers on the eastbound frontage road past the 1604 interchange stay on it through the UTSA Boulevard and Hausman Road intersections. The next way onto the main lanes is the entrance ramp south of Hausman Road.

Heading to The Rim, UTSA or Fiesta Texas

This is the trip that changed the most. With the eastbound I-10 La Cantera Parkway ramps closed, the Camp Bullis U-turn is the turnaround for anyone going from La Cantera Parkway back onto eastbound I-10. The UTSA Boulevard bypass, due by the end of the year, is the piece designed to help eastbound traffic get past the La Cantera Parkway backups.

The finish date depends on which TxDOT page you read

TxDOT gives the interchange's estimated cost as $463 million. It's one part of the 23-mile Loop 1604 North Expansion, which the agency describes as a $1.4 billion investment. The agency doesn't give one completion date. Its Texas Clear Lanes listing shows a 2022–2027 timeline, and its March update said it expects full completion in 2027. Its Segment 2 project page lists 2028.

Either way, the ramp changes won't stop anytime soon. Roundabouts, turnarounds and collector-distributor roads are all still to be built. Each one could move a detour again. TxDOT runs a live traffic-impacts map for the Loop 1604 project and says it will post notices as they become available. It's worth checking the TxDOT Loop 1604 traffic impacts page before any trip where timing matters, because weekend and overnight closures change from week to week.

A place to stop on the new route

All this frontage-road driving at least runs past something new. Sunny's: All Day Brunch & Bar, owned by Albi Zogaj, moved into the former Mash'd space at 17623 La Cantera Parkway, Unit 107. The Express-News reported the opening in June and listed daily hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The menu includes berry cheesecake crepes, chicken and waffles, crème brûlée French toast and barbacoa chilaquiles. If you're coming from the westbound 1604 side, take the frontage road through the interchange to get there.

At Evoke Realty, we keep track of the changes that shape daily life on the I-10 corridor, from a ramp that moves to a brunch spot that opens. If you'd like to talk through what the work at 1604 and Camp Bullis means for your home in The Dominion, contact us.
